Yksi put down the book, slightly exhausted be the effort she put into restoring it. Only then did she realize that someone was coming up behind her. “Quiet as always” she thought recognizing Shade’s familiar footsteps. She stood up and turned towards him, wanting to say something, but froze speechless for a moment.
“Your face”, Yksi finally broke the silence with a half question half exclamation, reaching out to touch the perfectly healed skin of his cheek.
The right side of his face, usually covered by his black mask, was now visible in the faint candle light filling the room. Not a scar or burn was left. He was smiling at her, as if forgiving her for the recent disagreements between them.
“Thank you” he said.
“For what?”, she didn’t seem to understand.
“You already know for what.” he grabbed her by the wrists and pulled her towards him. His face close to hers, he whispered “I have a gift for you too.”
Before she could say anything he sealed her lips with a kiss. She didn’t resist, Korvin will never know and at this moment it somehow felt so right. She started to relax and then without a warning pain exploded from both her wrists. Instinctively she tried to pull back her hands, but his grip was tight. The pain, followed by blood dripping down her arm, came from where their wrists were touching.
The pulsing wound felt as if someone was sliding a blade under her skin. Her eyes started to swell with tears, yet he kept his face next to hers though the kiss was broken. “Thank you” he whispered a moment later and let her go.
She immediately raised her hands closer to her eyes blurry with tears. A tattoo like imprint of a handle of a knife was slowly fading on her wrist. She was also slowly realising it felt familiar. A shadow dagger - something she read about in the book titled “Thirteen Blades of Shadow”, which was now laying at her feet.
Wanting to demand explanation from Shade she looked towards where he was standing just a moment ago. She would never hear another word from him, Shade’s figure was fading away right in in front of her eyes. He just smiled. Yksi’s blood was dripping down her wrists onto the book cover below.
As each drop made a loud splash on the leather, his image pulsed with returning colour. Yet the fading outpaced the blood. Soon she could barely see his the translucent image of what used to be a person. That was the last she time she saw Shade, but his gift would save her life more than once.
